So today it’s the 13th of March 2007 which means its Leetspeak day!

The word “leet” comes originally from “elite” and was used to describe skilled pc users like hackers in the 80ies. Elite simply became “leet” and because the title came with a lot of respect, non-hackers started to call themselves leet aswell. And then Leetspeak started spreading on the Internet.

Leet is a language used in chats, forums and in online games. You have prolly all heard some of it in Wow, like “n00b”, “d00d”, “pwn”, “lol”, “omg” and “wtf”. So leet is about replacing letters with numbers or other symbols that visually looks the same, or simply to make a phrase shorter or misspell it on purpose. So Leet would be l33t or 1337.

And now you see why today is Leetspeak day, cause of the date 13/3/7. Now I don’t think this is anything like “speak like a pirate day” so we all have to write in leet, so don’t worry about not knowing leetspeak.

Now most of us know a little leet like the examples above, but most people don’t write leet all the time. I’m sure there’s some people out there that can write leet as fast as normal writing, but for us nubs its very difficult to read. What does this say for example:

It can be hard to read what it says, so thats why some people really hate leetspeak. And personally i do find it annoying if someone spams a chat with leet all the time, (omg omg omg wtf bbQ ffs!) - but on the other hand it can also make writting a bit faster sometimes.
